Angel Luis De La Rosa Gonzáles, born in 1971 in Santiago de Cuba, is a sculptor who has been living and working in Curaçao since 2009. At the age of 12, he began his training at the José Joaquin Tejada Academy in Santiago de Cuba. After completing his studies, he worked as a drawing and sculpture teacher and he’d the position of president of the Asociación Cubana de Artisanos Artistas for ten years.
The artwork is a ‘remembrance of the Blue quarry’. This former quarry in Blauw played a major role in the history of Curaçao, particularly dring the Second World War. The work is inspired by humanity’s ability to carve a path through nature and to carry out a heavy, risky activity such as mining. At the same time the quarry was an essential activity for the economic and social development of the island. This sculpture is a tribute and a sign of respect for the workers who once laboured in the Blauw quarry.
The sculpture is the first of a series titled Los Gigantes, monumental sculptures that Angel Luis De La Rosa hopes to realize on Curaçao.
