A druid is a mythical figure, who in former days, withdrew into nature, where he maintained ties with nature. In this sculpture the druid is presented as the protector of turtles. Ria Houwen (1947) is mainly known as a painter of abstract landscapes, sea views and torsos, but she also makes metal sculptures. She builds and ‘sews’ man-sized statues using scraps collected for that purpose. The Druid was made as part of a judicial project, in collaboration with a group of ankle bracelet wearers. https://youtu.be/02Dmo4_0_gk
