‘Palu di Spiritu II’

‘Palu di Spiritu II’

Giovanni Abath, born and raised in Curaçao, is renowned for his innovative sculptures and installations that often create a profound connection between local heritage and contemporary art. His work, which combines materials such as stainless steel, wood, and iron, can be admired at public locations such as Brionplein in Willemstad and the Blue Bay Sculpture Garden.

‘Palu di Spiritu II’ is the successor to Abath’s earlier acclaimed work and reflects the strong bond between nature, culture, and the spiritual force of Curaçao. The sculpture refers to the indigenous Casearia tremula or Geelhout, locally known as kenepa spirito, a tree species with strong symbolic value on the island. Abath’s work radiates greatness and strength. Palu di Spiritu II stands as a guardian, reminding us that one can find roots even in the most stormy winds.

The Palu di Spiritu also plays a central role in the award-winning film Buladó (2020), which received critical acclaim at the Netherlands Film Festival and won the Golden Calf for Best Film. The artwork serves as a symbol of connection, strength, and transformation.

In addition to his role as an artist, Giovanni Abath is also a significant cultural ambassador for Curaçao. His body of work, which besides Palu di Spiritu includes installations such as Man of Steel (also on view in the Blue Bay Sculpture Garden) and History in Motion at Brionplein, showcases his versatility and depth. At his studio and gallery, the 7.1 Experience at Landhuis Morgenster, visitors can discover more of his unique creations.
