Ailsa Anastatia (1978) was born in Curaçao. From 1997 to 2001 she attended the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg, the Netherlands. After receiving her first teacher’s degree she subscribed at the Art Academy Amsterdam in 2001. Three years later she received her degree first grade teacher for Visual arts and Design (2004). Ailsa Anastasia teaches at Kolegio A. de Paula (KAP) since 2007. Ailsa is known for her installations, drawings and paintings inspired by the theme space. Physical space, space between people, inner space, open or closed spaces, but also social/ cultural/ spiritual “spaces”. The way in which we interact with our surrounding space and how we move within the space. The variety of materials and techniques used in her work depends on the story she wishes to convey. About ‘I own this piece of land’ the artist says: “This piece is about local ‘deforestation’. In the process of ‘making the space our own’ we sometimes forget that we are causing serious damage to our ecosystem. The solid concrete blocks are a symbol for human invasion and imbalance against nature. The branches used in this installation were picked at a new construction site that has been stripped. This is a phenomenon that happens in the Caribbean too, maybe on a smaller scale but it happens too often.
