Big Mama

1998
cement with polystyrene
80 x 80 x 155 cm

The Big Mama on the Sculpture Route is the prototype of a series of full-bodied female figures made of cement or bronze. Some Big Mama’s were cast at the bronze foundry at Mattheywerf, which was founded by Hortence. The foundry has, however, been destroyed. The bronze Big Mama at the Avila Beach hotel and those at Kura Hulanda and at the Orco Bank are especially well known. The enormous cement colossus, next to the by Avantia Damberg colorfully painted staircase in Otrobanda, is also worth mentioning, as is too the statue at the entrance of the Blue Bay Resort, which she completed with the help of the late Dries Kreijkamp in 1993. Hortence has donated the Big Mama at Blue Bay to the Blue Bay Sculpture Foundation.
